How to Find Deals on Craigslist

I'm going to explain a few techniques on how to get the best deals on Craigslist, so you are paying rock bottom prices for the items you want.

1. Catch Early Postings

To really find incredible deals on Craigslist, you need to catch postings before anyone else. This means constantly checking and refreshing Craigslist to see the new postings. A good way to do this is pick a category in the for sale section and make that you home page in your Internet browser. Then every time you log online or refresh back to your home page, you will see the latest Craigslist postings in your category. If you see a deal, contact that seller as quickly as possible!

I had a successful streak a few months back when I was checking Craigslist in the “computers & tech” section about every 10 minutes or so. I found some amazing deals and got the items because I caught the listings before anyone else.

2. Be The First Person To Contact The Seller

Probably the best way to get the deals you want on Craigslist is to be the first one to contact the seller for an item you are interested in. Your goal in this obviously obtain the item before anyone else has a chance to buy it or make an offer for it. And unfortunately right now, one of the only ways to do this is to constantly check Craigslist as much as possible during the day for the new postings and contact the seller immediately upon seeing a good deal.

When I obtained the Macbook Pro laptop I talked about on the website for this ebook, I was able to get this item for a few reasons:

1.I was one of the first to contact the seller.
2.I was THE first one to leave my phone number (I'll talk about this later)

How was I able to contact the seller before anyone else? By constantly checking Craigslist . That day I was checking Craigslist about once every 20 minutes waiting for new postings and good deals.

I call this “going into buying mode”. In “buying mode” I make Craigslist the home page of my Internet browser and do a refresh every few minutes, waiting for the new postings to come out. I look for any new deals and if I see something I like, I contact the seller immediately. My goal in doing this is to find cheap items I can sell at a later time either on Ebay or Craigslist.

This method takes a good deal of work and time. Obviously you can be doing other things in between each refresh, but you need to constantly do a check every few minutes or so. Maybe if you have a job where you a sitting in a cubicle all day, you could pull this off. Or if you already have a work at home job, you can devote time to this. Many times to get a good deal with this method you have to be lucky, but the more you check the postings the better your chances are of being the first to contact the buyer.
Later in this chapter I explain what to say to the seller and how to communicate with him. But for right now, just keep alert for new postings and being the first person to contact the seller. If the seller put his phone number in the posting – CALL IT! You want to have fast communication and the phone is far faster than email for most people. I recently obtained an item for a ridiculously low price from a seller because though I was not the first to email him, I was the first one to actually call him and he wanted to deal with me. I beat out a few people on that deal and I'll bet they are sorry they didn't call him!
